This one is a group application, not an individual homeowner one — but a homeowner can organize their neighbors and apply on the group's behalf. The 2026 round opens August 3 and is first-come, first-served while funds last.
No-Cost At-Home Chipping Program

Free at-home chipping for Santa Cruz County households in the wildland-urban interface. You build your piles to spec and register during the sign-up window (April 1-30 for the spring round), and a contractor hired by the RCD comes to your property in early May and blows the chips back onto your land except in sensitive habitat. Only material cleared from within 100 feet of an occupied structure, or within 10-15 feet of a private road, qualifies. Bonny Doon and South Skyline Fire Safe Council areas are served by their own programs instead.
