How our satellite detection works

Satellites watch day and night

NASA's VIIRS satellites pass over several times a day, Europe's Meteosat rescans every 10 minutes, and Sentinel-3 adds its own independent passes. Different orbits, different sensors — none relies on the others.

They check each other

One satellite seeing heat can be a glitch, sun glare, or a factory roof. When independent systems see heat in the same place, the signal is much stronger — one system's mistake never becomes your alert.

We say what it likely is — honestly

Each detection is checked against what sits under it (forest, farmland, industry) and how it behaves over time, then labelled plainly: likely vegetation fire, possible fire / unverified heat, or a known static heat source that is not a fire. Only a fire service can confirm a wildfire.

You see the area, not just a dot

On the map, tracked heat becomes a shape — the satellite-detected heat extent — with plain words on it, and whether the detections are expanding. Shapes show where satellites see heat, not exact fire boundaries.

Why don't the fires have names?

EFFIS maps fires from satellite imagery rather than agency incident reports, so records carry the nearest municipality and district instead of an official fire name.

What does "hectares mapped" mean?

The burnt area satellites have detected so far for that fire — updated as new passes come in. It is a satellite measurement, not an agency estimate, and fires under a few hectares may not appear.
