How to protect yourself from wildfire smoke
Stay indoors and seal up
Close windows and doors, and run your AC on recirculate so you're not pulling smoke inside.
Run a HEPA air purifier
A true-HEPA purifier sized to the room dramatically cuts indoor fine particulate (PM2.5) — the part of smoke that harms lungs.
Watch sensitive groups
Kids, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with asthma, COPD, or heart disease should be most cautious.
Wear an FFP2/N95 mask outdoors
Cloth masks don't stop PM2.5. A well-fitted FFP2 or N95 does. Limit time and exertion outside.

FAQ
How does this smoke map work?
The smoke layer comes from SILAM (Finnish Meteorological Institute), a European-scale smoke dispersion model — Europe's own equivalent to the US model. Underneath are real air-quality station readings (European Air Quality Index, EEA) and every active fire detected by satellite (EFFIS/Copernicus).
Why is there smoke where there are no fires near me?
Wildfire smoke travels with the wind at high altitude, often hundreds of kilometres from the fire that produced it. That's why you can have hazy skies and poor air quality on a day with no local fire at all.
How often is the smoke forecast updated?
The smoke model updates several times a day. Air-quality stations update hourly. The fire layer refreshes every few minutes from the official European source.
Is this map a substitute for official warnings?
No. This map is for awareness. For official air-quality and health warnings, follow the authorities listed under Official sources below. For emergencies, call 112.
When is Spain's wildfire season?
Peak season runs June through September, with the highest risk during heatwaves and in areas like Galicia, the interior, and the Mediterranean coast. Risk drops outside those months but doesn't disappear, especially in dry years.
