Residents of Incline Village and Crystal Bay can request a free defensible space inspection and free curbside chipping of the limbs and brush they pile at the curb. Service runs spring through fall (2026 scheduling opened May 4); requests are usually done within one to three weeks. Piles must be under 20 ft long, 6 ft high and 6 ft wide, with no branch over 6 inches in diameter and no stumps, roots, lumber, nails or pine cones. Chips are left on site for your own landscaping use.

The county fire district sends a crew to your curb and chips the brush, branches and dead vegetation you cut for defensible space, at no charge. It is restricted to residents who are elderly, disabled, or low-income and cannot haul material to a green waste drop-off site. You apply online for a seasonal round (spring and fall), only about 12 homes are approved per day, material must be 8 inches or less in diameter, and you must be home when the crew arrives.

Twice a year (spring and fall) the fire district opens drop-off sites where any Washoe County resident can dump the juniper, sagebrush, rabbitbrush, dead vegetation and tree branches they removed from around their home, free of charge. The district chips, masticates or burns the material. Household trash, lumber, grass clippings, stumps with root balls, and contractor/landscaper loads are not accepted. Spring 2026 ran May 2-3 at Silver Lake Station (Red Rock Road, Reno) and the NDF station in Washoe Valley.
Wildfire Assistance Program (East Washoe Valley)

Home and property owners on the east side of Washoe Lake can get wildland fuels reduction work done on their private property at no cost, through a five-year district-run project announced in December 2024. You start by calling TMFPD (775-326-6000 or 775-722-8992) for a free Defensible Space Survey by a district inspector, which sets the scope before any work happens. Strictly geographic: only the east side of Washoe Lake qualifies.

Pays part of the cost of conservation practices on private land, including forest-management and fuels-reduction work that lowers wildfire risk. This is the main federal program an individual landowner can apply to directly.
Who qualifies: Owners of non-industrial private forestland, agricultural producers, and Tribes. A written Forest Management Plan is required before financial assistance is approved. Available practices, funding pools and cutoff dates are set state by state.
