You pile limbs, branches, small trees and bushes at the end of your driveway (nothing over 6 inches in diameter, no stumps, roots, dirt or nails) and submit a request form; the district aims to chip within two weeks. The same district also offers free defensible space inspections by appointment, seasonal neighborhood Community Work Days, and a free 'Compost Your Combustibles' drop-off at the Heavenly Boulder Lodge lot in Stateline.

Homeowners in five Douglas County Tahoe neighborhoods - Upper Kingsbury, Zephyr Heights, Zephyr Cove, Zephyr Knolls and Marla Bay - can be reimbursed for half of what they spend on required defensible space work, up to $5,000. The order of operations matters: schedule a Tahoe Douglas Fire inspection first, submit a pre-application and signed rebate agreement through the online portal, get pre-approved, then you have 90 days to collect at least three contractor bids, finish the work, submit photos, and pass a final fire district inspection. Reimbursement lands one to two months later. Funded by the USDA Forest Service, Nevada Division of Forestry, TDFPD and Tahoe RCD.
