Why Reno (Reno–Tahoe) sees major wildfires

Reno sits where the high Sierra meets the Great Basin — sagebrush and grass on the valley floor, dense forest on the Sierra front. Strong winds drive both fast-moving range fires into the foothill neighborhoods and large timber fires just over the crest, which routinely fill the Truckee Meadows with smoke.

The 2021 Caldor Fire crossed the Sierra crest and forced the evacuation of South Lake Tahoe just southwest of Reno; range fires like the 2011 Caughlin and 2012 Washoe Drive fires burned homes within the metro itself.

Reno fire tracker — FAQ

What wildfires are burning near Reno right now?

The live map and list on this page show wildfires currently reported near Reno to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), refreshed each time you load the page. Use “fires near me” to center it on your exact neighborhood.

Is Reno under a Red Flag Warning?

When the National Weather Service posts a Red Flag Warning for the Reno area, it means critical fire-weather — typically Santa Ana winds plus low humidity — where any new fire can spread fast. This page reflects active fire-weather alerts for the region.

How do I get Reno fire alerts?

Turn on free FireRisk alerts for your Reno address and we’ll email or text you the moment a new fire is reported nearby or a Red Flag Warning is issued. For real-time evacuation orders, also follow Reno Fire Department and Watch Duty.

Is this an official Reno emergency map?

No. FireRisk is an awareness tool built on official NIFC and NWS data — it complements but never replaces Reno’s official alerts, local fire authorities, and 911.

Awareness only — built on official NIFC (fires) and NWS (fire weather) data, which can lag real conditions. For Reno evacuation orders follow Reno Fire Department, Watch Duty, and call 911 in an emergency.
