Defensible space guide →What your 0–100 wildfire risk score means
Lower is safer. The score is a relative measure of how your location compares — not a prediction that a fire will happen. Here is what each band means for hazard and insurance.
0–19
Minimal wildfire hazard. Standard, admitted carriers should compete for you at the best rates.
20–39
Some exposure, but usually still firmly in the standard market. Basic mitigation keeps it there.
40–59
Elevated risk. Expect surcharges, stricter eligibility, and inspections — and real savings from documented mitigation.
60–79
Many admitted carriers decline. Often specialist or surplus-lines (E&S) territory, with a FAIR Plan as a backstop.
80–100
Among the most hazardous parcels. Coverage is frequently a FAIR Plan plus a difference-in-conditions wrap. Mitigation is essential to re-enter the market.
Bands follow the FireRisk model exactly. The score blends the USFS Wildfire Risk to Communities layer, FEMA, NIFC fire history, and USGS terrain into one number. See exactly how it's weighted →
